How long should it take to process car insurance claim?
In general, most insurance companies settle claims within about a month upon filing but each accident is different. This is why it is not that easy to provide a specific turnaround for insurance claims. It really depends on the type of your claim.
Whenever an insured driver files a claim, the insurance company gathers information from you about the accident. Information required to file a claim include the model, year and make of vehicles or cars involved in the accident, as well as the names, addresses, contact and insurance information of everyone involved in the accident. You will also need to provide summary describing what happened during the accident and any police reports if they were filed.
The insurance company then sets an appointment with you, the car owner, to inspect the vehicle. After the inspection, the insurance company then provides you an estimate of what they are willing to pay for the damages. Filing a claim may only take about 15 to 30 minutes. After this, it's time to set up appointments to get estimates from car repair shops - some insurance companies may require more than one estimate.
Payment of the actual claim may occur upon receiving the estimate, often within 24 hours. In other cases, the payment may not be made until the work is done. Check with your agent to see what their policy is.
Delays on receiving your claim can happen though especially if there are multiple vehicles involved in the accident or if there are discrepancies on the information that your insurance company has from the information that other persons involved in the accident have provided. These types of delays typically occur when there is not a clear cut person at fault for the damage. These kinds of situation may involve arbitration or mediation between parties and insurance claim may last from at least 2 weeks up to a couple of months.
